The discipline of Bibliometrics, in the sphere of Library and Information Sciences, essentially involves the application of statistical methods for the quantitative analysis of scholarly literature on any theme. The Bibliometrics analysis takes into account various parameters such as author, citation, co-citation, journal, institution, country and so on. Cross-ref does not maintain either the abstract or the full database of scholarly output. Cross-ref linking service spans across a wide variety of disciplines. The basic purpose of co-citation analysis is to identify the research gaps within the existing body of literature on a specific theme. Through the comprehensive literature review it is established that the focus of almost all of the bibliometric studies is on Islamic Banking, Economics and Finance (IBEF) sector. None of the studies paid attention to carry out the source co-citation analysis and author co-citation analysis of published literature on core Islamic disciplines. Moreover, also none of the studies deal with “Cross-ref”. Therefore, this paper makes a meaningful attempt to fill this gap by carrying out the source co-citation analysis and author co-citation analysis of published literature on Islam and indexed in Cross-ref. The source co-citation revealed that Oreintalism occupies the top position. The author co-citation analysis divulged Tibi was leading cited author. The present study is limited to just eight years from 2002 to 2010. In order to have a comprehensive picture of the co-citation pattern of core Islamic discipline indexed in Cross-ref it is imperative that the future bibliometric studies may cover larger time period and include references co-citation analysis and bibliographic coupling as well.
