Abstract

Top-tier journals in any field always exert immense influence on the disciplinary evolution because of their extreme selectivity, stringent quality control and global reach. The present bibliometric study examined the contributions of Indian authors to the top six LIS journals globally over a 35-year span from 1989 to 2023. The Web of Science (WoS) citation database was scanned to retrieve records, which were then analyzed for chronological publication growth, scholarly impact, authorship trends, collaboration patterns, productive authors and the most prolific institutions and collaborating countries. Indian authors contributed a total of 427 papers to these top six LIS journals, including 71 papers with international collaboration. Among these journals, Scientometrics was the most productive journal followed by Library Hi Tech and Online Information Review. Scientists like B.M. Gupta, Gangan Prathap and K.C. Garg were the leading notable authors. It is worthy noting that Indian Scientists involved in science communication and policy research played their prominent role whereas the LIS community lack global collaborations and internationalization efforts which could augment their credibility and productivity in the top LIS journals worldwide. The evolving research landscape demonstrates a gradual transition from conventional bibliometric analysis to more advanced evaluation metrics, aimed at addressing emerging interdisciplinary fields and incorporating contemporary technological methodologies.
