Public Sector Employment Opportunities in the Field of Library & Information Science during 2018 – 2022

Job opportunity and Employability are burning issues in rapid changing environment in all spheres of life. Present research paper assesses, examines and analyses the Government job advertisements for LIS professionals appeared in “Employment News” and Social Networking. It is a comprehensive study of 7197 jobs employment advertise published from January 2018 to December 2022. The present article studied the nature of job advertising, pattern of vacancies, posts wise, cadre wise and year wise vacancies analysis in various sectors. The results shows that School education (43.93%) and Higher Education (34.28%) is the largest sector for accommodating fresh Library and Information Science trained professionals. Technical Education, Medical Institutes, R & D institutes, and Public libraries are providing very little opportunities of jobs for fresher’s of LIS students. Large numbers of deputation posts are advertised in Technical Education, Public Serving Government Departments, Medical and Research and Development organisations while more than 75% temporary vacancies advertised in education field only. It is matter of concern that out of 28 States and 8 Union Territories, only three states namely Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Punjab is recruiting Library professionals in degree colleges. The impact of COVID -19 on the job openings is also studied in the present paper and a sudden fall is also observed during COVID – 19 in the recruitment processes. Findings and Suggestions are also given to empowering the human resources working in the libraries.
