Abstract

Library and Information Centre users' demands are constantly increasing, and they anticipate specific information in a short period. The variety of electronic resources is also expanding daily; therefore, maintaining each resource and successful retrieval necessitates using a tool, such as a Web-scale discovery service (WSD). Choosing a WSD mechanism is a complex and critical activity requiring a substantial expenditure of time, resources, and money. WSD services for libraries can facilitate academics' access to the information resources of the library. Moreover, the WSD enables access to a broad selection of remotely hosted content, such as publisher and aggregator content. The library frequently purchases or acquires licenses for thousands of full-text journals, additional content from abstracting and indexing networks, online repositories, and cloud storage. This study explores the features and functionality of the most popular WSD tools used by universities/colleges/institutes in India and their contribution to web-scale tools for information retrieval, optimization of electronic resource utilization, and online learning. The method of surveying is employed in this research, and the questionnaire is distributed to all of the chosen educational institutions in India. These institutions include India's central universities, state universities, and colleges. This paper also emphasizes WSD, the significance of discovery tools and services, and recommendations regarding the expensive library databases. The findings and suggestions included in this study are helpful for library professionals to enhance information retrieval and increase the usage of electronic resources and online learning.
