This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of the process of developing an ontology to encapsulate the multifaceted domain of Indian performing arts, with a particular emphasis on classical dance forms, including Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Kuchipudi. The rich heritage of Indian performing arts and classical dances presents a significant challenge for knowledge representation and creation. To build a robust knowledge base, we utilised Prot´eg´e as our central platform. Due to modernisation and the rapid use of ICT, users are not receiving the desired semantic information. To meet their demand, we need to build an ultrasmart knowledge base. This includes the categorisation of various art forms, their historical evolution, origin, musical compositions, intricate nuances, regional variations, artist lineages, and their intricate interconnections. There
are multiple approaches for creating the knowledge base. Among them, an ontology-based approach has been used. Therefore, in this study, we have developed an ontology specifically for the Performing Arts of India, with a primary focus on classical dances. Prot´eg´e is an open-source free software developed by Stanford University. It can be used for both desktop and web versions, and is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux. We installed Prot´eg´e software for Windows and created the domain ontology. The present study is a pilot work that will be extended in the future to incorporate the entire Indian culture. This study will enhance the knowledge base of Indian performing arts by serving as an invaluable resource for researchers, educators, artists, and enthusiasts of the field. Additionally, it has the potential to enhance cultural preservation and organisation in this digital age, ensuring their continued relevance and accessibility in an ever-evolving world.
